COURSE OVERVIEW Professional Dramatic Writing is a foundational writing course for creators who want to understand the mechanics of entertainment storytelling and learn how to write dramatic material the way professionals do. Through a combination of lectures, readings, in-class writing, performance, and guided workshopping, students are introduced to the core principles of story structure, character development, and dramatic escalation. Over the course of the program, writers will create and revise multiple scenes and develop a complete short dramatic project, gaining hands-on experience with the full creative process—from idea to execution to revision. The emphasis is on clarity, craft, and process, giving students a strong foundation they can build on across mediums and throughout their careers. FORMAT Eight weeks of live, weekly instruction Class length: 2–3 hours per class Combination of lecture, writing exercises, readings, performance, and workshopping WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR Writers new to dramatic writing who want a strong, professional foundation Writers with experience who want to strengthen their understanding of structure and character Creators working in any narrative medium who want transferable storytelling skills Writers seeking a practical, entertainment-focused introduction to dramatic craft COURSE OUTCOMES By the end of Professional Dramatic Writing, students will: Understand how professional dramatic stories are built Learn how to create dynamic, three-dimensional characters Have several fully workshopped scenes or micro shorts for their portfolio One complete, fully workshopped and producible ten-minute dramatic piece in the medium of their choosing Gain hands-on experience giving and receiving professional notes Learn foundational script format and producibility principles applicable across mediums Leave with a repeatable creative process for developing dramatic work from idea to finished draft REQUIREMENTS Stable internet connection Google Docs, Word, Pages, or any writing software A willingness to write, revise, collaborate, and participate in workshop WRITING REQUIREMENT: Moderate to heavy A deposit of $500 is required to reserve your spot in the course. The remaining $1,000 will be collected via payment link and must be completed prior to the start of class. Studio Access and Audit Access Tiers are also available at discounted rates.
